Serpent designer Billy Easton from USA, is part of a team of 5 designers, each with their own specialty. He is responsible for and very proud on this latest design of the Cobra SRX8, which he worked on for the past year.  Billy used the input from many Serpent drivers, team drivers and distributors, to create this brand new 1/8 buggy. The focus is as always on performance, but we have paid a lot of attention to ease of use, and durability.  View also the Designer interview on our website.

Serpent as company started in 1980, and has over 30 years experience in developing, testing, designing and manufacturing radio controlled model cars and is one of the longest existing rc brands in the World with 9 World Championship titles and countless European, American, Asian and national titles won by Serpent drivers !

Serpent Cobra SRX8; Full Details

The chassis cnc machined from 3mm thick aerospace type 7075 T6 aluminium and  comes hard anodised for durability.  The new shape is wider at the rear  to help the chassis roll and drag in rougher conditions. The kick-up angle is optimised to fit with the mating parts.  All holes in the chassis are countersunk.
The chassis features 2 large pockets, one is for the steel skid plate and one for the steel gear mesh plate.  There are 2 keyholes to center-fix the front and rear suspension brackets in place. The pocket for the flywheel is large enough to suit most commonly used starter wheels.
The side guards mount to the bend chassis-sides from the inside with  pre-threaded holes in the chassis. The chassis offers good size surfaces for the downstops.

Skid plate
The cnc machined steel skid plate will protect the chassis at the rear end where it wears most. Its easily replaceable by a new one, with just 4 screws. Optional ones in other materials to follow.

Steering blocks
The  steering blocks  are made in 7075 T6 aluminium and are anodised in black.  These steering blocks have been designed to allow you to change the Ackermann at the steering spindle as well as give us the optimal scrub offset in conjunction with the caster block.  The bushings press into the blocks and reduce any unwanted play.

Mesh plates
A really cool and innovative way to mesh the gears perfectly and easily. The cnc machined mesh plates come in 3 size included in the kit. It will perfectly mesh the clutch and main gear. The mesh plates have increments of 0,1mm . This new system will make sure you can get the engine out and inside the car faster and be sure the mesh is perfected and the engine straight.  In total we offer 5 mesh plates to suit all common ratios used, but 3 sizes are included standard for fine-tuning.

Chassis stiffeners
Extra long  chassis stiffeners, front and rear in composite material to offer the right flex and prevents the chassis to bend too much. Easy locking fastening system.

Side guards
The composite side guards help to keep debris out of the car, add rigidity to the chassis and support the body.  The side guards are fixed to the chassis from the top in pre-threaded holes in the chassis. This way the screws are protected well and its easier to re-assembly when needed. The side guards feature a pocket on the outside to allow mounting some velcro tape to guide / fix the body.

Steering system – servo saver
The dual axis steering system with integrated servo saver is mounted under an angle for less bump steer and a more direct steering feel.
The axis are made in lightweight aluminium.
The new bell crank accepts a bearing raced crossbar with zero slop. It is designed with the optimal Ackermann to  increase the car’s driveability.

Servo saver
These new servo saver parts not only have the new Ackermann, but also have a new internal servo saver design.  It incorporates a helix in order to guarantee the proper operating of the servo saver assembly. The servo saver spring is protected by a dense foam cover, to keep debris out.  The spring pre-tension clamp nut  can be locked in place to avoid turning loose.

The easy to use and durable radio tray is made as low as possible but in such way that all electronics fit in easy and well.  Its features a separate section in the front for the battery pack, to have the heavier part more forward. The lid has 4 screws. Both servo’s fit in nicely with plenty servo-spacers to mount them on the right height. The chassis below the servo’s has lower pockets to allow mounting the servos very low. Of course you need to think about chassis flex/torsion, so don’t mount them too low.  The transponder, small or medium type, has a nice flush mounted holder included.  The receiver box also has 4 small screws for easy and fast access.  You can mount a standard switch, or use the supplied cover in case you use another solution.  2 decals are included to cover the battery and receiver box.

Fuel tank
The 125cc  fuel tank is a complete new design.   The spring and cap allow the pressure to be more equal across the entire top of the cap, as well as the design of the cap has no flex .  The clunk has been enlarged so it will sit at the bottom of the tank and will not pop up or float at the bottom. While the drain section on the top has been improved where there is now a 4mm hole that will allow dirt and debris to escape and not clog.  The fuel tube clips now mount to the tank with screws so you won’t have to worry about loosing them.  The tank pull will enable faster and more secure refuelling.   The tank has been re positioned so that its further away from the exhaust , which will prevent melting of the tank.  The kit includes  purpose made insert to reduce the content if needed.  The tank mounts on 2 strong composite poles with rubber grommets for flexible mounting and allow easy disassembly for checks and cleaning.

Air filter
High quality 2 piece dense foam  for perfect filtering ( use top quality  air filter oil only ).  The  holder allows for easy assembly. On the front –top side the mount is attached to the center support with a spring wire, fixed with a body clip. The new rubber elbow  allows for good airflow and features wide grooves to apply tie-wraps.

Driveshafts / transmission
The Serpent spring steel drive shaft are equal in length in front and rear and 1 of the central ones, which is easy for spares stocking.

Center diff mount
Durable center mounts with large size bearings  to mount the brake system and center differential. A moulded brake disk guider is mounted on the brackets.  The whole system is made as low as possible for CG reasons.  The sleek top-cover keeps dirt out and guides the 2 brake cams.

The SRX8 provides a conventional braking system with brake cams, steel disks and steel pads with effective pre-glued brake pads .

Differential cases
The strong moulded differential cases which contain the differential and supports the shock towers.
The differential front and rear can be removed after taking out only 4 screws and removing the anti-roll bars, super-easy !

The diff housing has been completely re-designed to make way for evolution in diff technology.  The diff now has cavities designed specifically for closed cell foam. This foam will compensate for expansion of the oil, which will allow us to fill the diffs more full, keeping the gears fully engulfed in oil.  The cavity where the gears rest has also been redesigned so that there is not low pressure zones outside of the gears.  This will keep more oil on the gears even when spinning at high rpms. This in turn will keep the diff more consistent at low and high speeds as well as hot or cold .

Differential gears  28 / 14 / 44
The hardmetal 28T and 14T satellite gears have a  larger overall diameter,  to make sure they are more in oil, making the diff more consistent , smoother and stronger .
The steel 44T ring gear is lighter and has  a perfect match with the new 28T gear.

Engine mount
Lightweight CNC machined engine mount in 7075 T6 aluminium with pre-threaded holes and large contact area with chassis, comes grey anodised .

Wing holder rear
The rear wing holder is a super durable and light one piece molded unit . The set includes wing-spacers to put the wing under a range of angles.

Wheel axles / hex / boots
The  durable Serpent spring steel wheel axles are captured CVD style  and have rubber boots to protect the system and bearings against dirt and dust, so it will all last longer.  The wheel hex is a durable hard aluminium version which fits all popular wheels very well.  The pins in use are 3mm ones to increase durability.

The new 15 dgr  c-hubs are made in 7075 T6 aluminum and are anodised in black.  These open style very durable units allow enough space to allow for the maximum steering-angle and allow space to mount the rubber dust protectors on the CVD system.  As optional we offer 13 and 17 degree alu c-hubs too.

The uprights are made of 7075 T6 aluminium with black anodizing and are universal ones to be used left and right .  The new uprights have the roll center adjustment in them with small inserts . Set screws are used to tighten down on the hinge pin to eliminate any unwanted play.  In the bottom part 2 threaded holes are made to allow for mounting  the optional brass weights of 15 gr each  for rough conditions.

Very durable and long moulded wishbones  front and rear.   The composite is chosen to have enough flex when needed.  The design has pockets in the top and bottom part of each arm  to mount the standard moulded insert plates, or the optional carbon fibre ones.   In that way you can choose the right arm flex for each condition.  Even different or no inserts front or rear and mixing moulded and carbon inserts is possible.  The moulded inserts will stiffen the arms only a little, but keeps them cleaner. The carbon ones,  or mixed with moulded ones will stiffen  the arms a lot.  Many options to try and apply.

The mudguards are offered in lightweight transparent polycarbonate and can be left clear, be painted or skinned as prefered.

Suspension brackets
The suspension brackets are CNC machined in 7075 T6 aluminium and grey anodised. They key into the chassis for perfect fit.  The brackets have precision machined pockets to use inserts to alter the set-up.

Anti-roll bars
The anti-roll bar system is the best around. Precision made wire runs in ball raced adaptors on the front and rear diff case-plates.  Superfree and stabile.  The wire connects to a ball joint which is fitted with a pivot ball to the wishbone.   The works !

Shock towers
The front and rear shock towers are durable 4.5mm carbon fibre units, CNC machined.

The effective 4-carbon shoe  race clutch is continued . It can be completely pre-assembled and then be mounted to the engine. The system comes with a  light and small aluminum flywheel and durable spring steel 13T clutch-housing .

Shock springs
Race shock springs which are pre-selected and paired. The shock springs are grinded flat for perfect operation.

The shocks are a completely overhauled design.  Durable polished steel 3.5mm rods are used with hard anodised caps and threaded shock-bodies.  A new seal pack consist of machined bushings and new x-rings and is kept in place with a small inside clip.  The shock pistons are machined delrin units for best performance.  The shocks in the kit are membrane style, with emulsion type hard coated caps and seals to be offered as option.

Wing rear black
The new flat type rear wing is a very effective medium downforce unit with large side wings.  The decal sheet offers side wing decals to apply.

Body mounts
This rear body mount has a rubber cushion in it. It allows the body mount to rotate front to rear in an impact or crash. This saves the body from breaking or tearing. The front one is a fixed type and is easy accessible.

Top quality shielded bearings with grease throughout the kit.

A new Avenger style  body is developed for the SRX8 with medium level downforce.  Cab-forward style body with small fin on the roof for stability.  Nice flowing sides with small rear upward fins for rear downforce. Enough space to allow for air filter, engine head, carburetor and exhaust / exhaust adaptor. Top quality polycarbonate.   The body has nice trimlines for easy cutting. Same for the body holes.  A masking sheet is included to assist with paintjob preps.

Designer Interview with Billy Easton, USA
Serpent is about to release a completely new nitro powered 1/8 scale buggy . Billy explains some of the specs of the car in the interview.

The Cobra SRX4 4 will be raced at the SilverState race this weekend by Joern Neumann, Griffin Hanna, Paul Ciccarello and Billy Easton. So if you are around, come to our Serpent pits and have a look
Designer interview Cobra SRX8 1/8 buggy
Hi Billy,
We like to ask you some questions on your latest design, the all-new new Cobra SRX8 ⅛ GP buggy.
Q: When did you start with the design ?
A: As simple of a question this is, its not really. The SRX8 is basically 5 years of development all wrapped up into an entirely new platform. Many of the components and ideas have been developed since the Cobra 811. In regards to when I starting putting
the entire SRX8 together as a whole, it was started in early to middle part of 2015.

Q: What are the 5 key elements of the SRX8 ?
A: Well , there are probably more than 5 key elements, but I will try to itemize you 5 really good ones.
1. Super easy to adjust gear mesh, regardless of what clutch bell or spur you use. Based on a pre-determined mesh system.
2. New fully re-designed gear diffs, which includes new gears, housings, and concepts, where we compensate for oil expansion over long runs
3. Shock absorbers that have been improved in design and also construction to provide the racer with a no frills experience on and off the track
4. Transmission cases that allow the driver to remove and maintenance the diffs without major disassembly of its local parts
5. A more standard break and throttle mechanism to simplify , adjustment and maintenance for customers.
Again I could go on with over a dozen supernice other features, but you will see that as soon as the full website is ready end march.

Q: Is it hard to design a ⅛ buggy that runs well on dirt and astro, or is it not as criticle as in 1/10 buggy ?
A: I think trying to design a car to run on such different surfaces is a very difficult task. However, in 1.8th, you do not have as many options.. You do not have many freedoms, in regards, to servos, engine, tank location. So in reality, the cars can only be designed a certain way, which in turn means, the advancement of those designs are quite limited. So, simply put, yes its easier to design a 1.8th nitro than a 1.10 buggy.

Q: Which parts or assemblies of the new cars are you most proud of design-wise ?
A: Well, we had a lot of really cool design ideas, which had we had the car out sooner, would have seemed as if we pioneered more. However, as any company develops their cars and the designs are all based on the same rules, it will lead most all companies down the same path. As for something I did special, my gear mesh adjustment is very unique and simple, all the while I am very proud of my steering geometry. Some stuff, which we did lead the industry on even in our previous Cobra 811, with the ball bearing sway bars is also still a very nice feature.

Q: Does the new Cobra SRX8 still share parts from the Cobra 811 Buggy ?
A: Yyes, but a very small amount only. The SRX8 is almost 85% or more new. This platform was developed for the racer, no matter the skill level. Its as easy as it gets design, that has proven to be extremly reliable and durable. Simplicity is alway better when it comes to customers.

Q: What is the gear ratio being used ?
A: We retained the ratio from the S811 2.0, which is 3.38:1 .. That breaks down to our 13t pinion and a 44t ring gear.

Q: Is the car light ?
A: I would say the car out of the box is mid level weight. Its around 3350-3400 grams out
of the box. If you are a weight concious person, you can get it down into the high 3200’s with a variety of our aluminum optionals.

Q: The Cobra 811 Be buggy has become famous for its durability, often referred to as a “ Tank” ( even though it was quite light); will see see that again in the SRX8 ?
A: The Cobra SRX8 is easily as durable as the Cobra 811. The only difference is, its easier to build, and also easier to work on. There are less screws and overall less parts to worry about.

Q: Last few years drivers play around more with weights; have you taken that wish into account ?
A: We did utilize some weights, but did not go to crazy. As the platform is run more in competition, we will decide what is the best place for the weight and create more optional parts to more refine the weight balance for more specific track conditions.

Q: What did you do on the aerodynamics side of the car ?
A; Actually, we designed a lot. We tested a couple different body designs as well as new wings. We will have two bodies for you too choose from. One will be a standard body, and the other will be a high downforce body. We then created a new rear wing that has larger side dams and a medium downforce center. It also can have a gurney mounted to it if you want to. We also have a lexan wing, which you can use a center foil and also a gurney. So when it comes to aerodynamics you have a lot more to choose from on this model.

Q: Who are the key drivers for 2016 ?
A: In 2016, we have a variety of drivers and skill levels. In our international competition, we will have Jorn Neumann in Europe, Shin Adachi in Japan, Lin Lehua in China, Griffin Hanna in the US, Carlos Duraes in Portugal. Aside from those more known drivers, we have all sorts of younger talented all over the world racing in their respective areas.

Q: When will we see the EP version being introduced, and will it share many parts ?
A: I am concepting the design for the EP, and my plan is to test a couple design ideas and then decide the best path. It would be the most ideal if the design shares as many of the SRX8 parts as possible. The idea here though is mostly to give the customers something that will benefit them in the long run and performs the best. So this one we need to get right. There is no fix date on it yet, but 2nd part of 2016 for sure. The Cobra Be 811 is still very successsful and liked, sof or sure that fills the gap till then. For drivers that run both classes ofcourse its easier lateron to have 2 cars that share most parts.

Q: When is the SRX8 ready for release ?
A It should be for sale/release in April. We are heavy into production at the moment and trying very hard to hit that deadline.

Q: When will the car be seen in public for the 1st time , at a coming race ?
A: : The plan is to Debut the car at the Silverstate Nitro Challenge in the US in the middle of March. At that point we will allow people to look at the car. This project for us, was kept very close to home. We tried our best to not let any of the information leak out before it was actually ready.

Q: When can drivers see the car in action in Europe and Asia ?
A: Those in Europe will be able to see it ran at the Neo buggy race in the UK end march. There is also a race in Asia a week prior to the Silverstate, where we will show the SRX8 car to dealers only at first.

Q: Will you be racing more actively in 1/8 buggy this year again ?
A: Now that we have a new car , I will start to attend more races. The idea is to help anyone who has purchased a car, and continue doing development leading up to the worlds in Las Vegas. I have always enjoyed nitro, so this well be good for me and also the company.

Thanks a lot for your time and answers !
